Before choosing a rehabilitation centre there are many
questions that need answering. One of the
most important, and overlooked is, “what are the therapists qualifications?” A
properly qualified therapist is a must for effective treatment. And any
Treatment Centre who values their staff and clients will ensure their therapists
receive regular Clinical Supervision.
Clinical
Supervision is essential to ensure high standards of professional practice.
Ongoing supervision helps practitioners to monitor and review the quality of
their work as well as their client's progress.
Supervision, moreover, is a form of professional self-regulation. It is essential for the
right to practice in the helping professions.
One of the primary reasons for
all supervision is to ensure that the quality of therapeutic intervention with
the client is of a consistently high standard in relation to the client’s needs.
Consequently, supervision must be acknowledged as a cornerstone of clinical
practice.
What is clinical supervision?
Supervision is the term used to describe planned regular periods of time that a
well trained and qualified supervisor and therapist spend together discussing
the supervisee’s work and learning progress. Supervision is a multi-dimensional
process which should provide the following functions:
To evaluate performance
To monitor levels and priorities of workload
To individually review cases.
It should provide a forum to assess the therapist/client relationship and
professional development.
It should be supportive, motivational, educative
and modelling.
Clinical supervision looks at the therapist’s behaviour within
the therapist/client relationship.
Why do we need supervision?
Firth et al conclude from their study that receiving supervision contributes
significantly to reducing emotional exhaustion among therapists. Sullivan has
found that ‘if the experience of stress is not alleviated …… the consequences
for therapists are problems with maintaining standards and quality of care
offered to clients’.
Supervision gives us the means to develop professional skills and judgement, and
a commitment to achieving professional growth in order to improve our standards
of service. It also continuously reassesses the therapists to be sure that
standards are maintained.
